The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features numerous engaging side quests that expand the lore of Hyrule while rewarding players for exploration. One such mission is The Horse Guards Request, which tasks players with tracking down unique mounts for an enthusiastic stable hand. Completing this objective requires a bit of patience and knowledge of Hyrule's nocturnal wildlife.
Starting the Quest at Outskirt Stable
To begin this quest, you need to travel to the Outskirt Stable located in the southwest region of Central Hyrule. Once you arrive, look for a stable worker named Toffa who is deeply fascinated by legendary and unusual horses. Speaking with him will initiate the quest line, as he expresses his desire to see a mythical skeletal horse creature before his days are over.
Before you can easily complete this task, you must ensure that you have completed prerequisite stable quests in the area. Having these smaller tasks out of the way allows Toffa to focus entirely on his unique request. Preparing yourself with proper equipment for cold weather or nighttime exploration is also highly recommended.
Finding the Skeletal Horse
The skeletal horse, officially known as a Stalhorse, only appears during the late-night hours in specific parts of Hyrule. You can reliably locate these creatures in the Sanidin Ruins Park, which is situated just north of the Outskirt Stable across the Regencia River. Wait until the in-game clock passes 9:00 PM for the skeletal riders and their mounts to rise from the ground.
When you spot the Stalhorse, you will first need to defeat the skeletal monster riding it. Once the rider is dealt with, approach the horse quietly from behind and press the mount button to soothe it. Keep in mind that these undead creatures will automatically collapse and disappear once the morning sun rises at 5:00 AM.
Bringing the Stalhorse to Toffa
After successfully calming the Stalhorse, you must ride it directly back to the Outskirt Stable to show it to the guard. Navigating the terrain at night can be slightly hazardous, so it is best to stick to the main dirt paths. Avoid deep water or steep cliffs that might cause the fragile mount to accidentally despawn or become trapped.
When you arrive back at the stable, ride the creature directly up to Toffa so he can witness it clearly. He will react with immense amazement and gratitude at the sight of the legendary creature. It is important to note that you cannot register a Stalhorse at the stable network, as the owners refuse to keep undead animals.
Quest Rewards and Final Rewards
Toffa will reward your efforts with a Purple Rupee, giving you a quick financial boost early in your journey. He will then mention another legendary creature, setting the stage for the next phase of his ongoing equestrian curiosity. Fulfilling these requests helps max out your stable points and unlocks valuable pony points for future upgrades.
Completing this mission serves as an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the unique mounting mechanics of the game. It also encourages players to explore the map during different times of the day to uncover hidden secrets. Keep exploring the vast wilderness of Hyrule to find even more hidden quests and valuable treasures.
